AI Slopocalypse: When the Internet Starts Tasting Like Garbage

What is AI Slop?

AI slop refers to content created by artificial intelligence that’s deliberately low quality and produced at scale. It’s often designed to generate engagement, regardless of whether the information is accurate, useful, or even aesthetically pleasing. Think of it as the fast food of the internet – cheap, readily available, and ultimately devoid of nutritional value. It is worth noting that the term engagement bait refers to the practice of creating content specifically designed to provoke reactions, shares, and comments, often prioritizing quantity over quality.

Estimates suggest that a disturbing percentage of content online is already AI-generated. LinkedIn, for example, is reportedly battling an influx of AI-authored articles. But it’s not just about individual users or wannabe influencers. This slop is being weaponized by everyone from coordinated political influence operations to nefarious actors seeking to spread disinformation, scalp event tickets, or steal your personal data. These are spread using bad bots that can successfully disguise themselve, making them harder to catch.

The Enshittification of Everything

This descent into digital dreck is part of a larger phenomenon, often referred to as « enshittification. » Enshittification is the gradual degradation of online platforms and services over time, driven by companies prioritizing profits over user experience. AI slop is simply the latest, and potentially most corrosive, manifestation of this trend. Platforms encourage and amplify the spread of engagement bait, because the engagement is what makes the platform money. The content itself is secondary.

The Political Poison Pill

The implications for democracy and political discourse are particularly alarming. AI can cheaply and efficiently generate misinformation about elections that’s practically indistinguishable from human-generated content. We’re already seeing evidence of AI-driven influence campaigns designed to sway public opinion and attack political adversaries. This isn’t a partisan issue, either. Both sides of the political spectrum are deploying AI bots to promote their preferred candidates, further amplifying polarization and eroding trust in legitimate sources of information.

The Bot Paradox: When AI Can’t Spot AI

Even the tools designed to combat AI slop are failing. Botometer, a tool intended to detect bots, has proven ineffective at identifying increasingly sophisticated fake accounts posting machine-generated content. This underscores the arms race we’re in, where AI-detection technology struggles to keep pace with the rapid advancements in AI generation.

Escaping the Slop, or Just Exacerbating the Problem?

Faced with this rising tide of digital refuse, many users are abandoning mainstream social media platforms in favor of smaller, invite-only online communities. While this may seem like a refuge, it also risks further fracturing our public sphere and exacerbating political polarization. This creates echo chambers where individuals are primarily exposed to like-minded perspectives, reinforcing existing biases and hindering constructive dialogue.

Is There a Way Out?

Some proposed solutions include labeling AI-generated content through improved bot detection and disclosure regulation. Labelling AI-generated content can make it easy for users to determine whats generated by AI, giving them insight on the source and quality of the information. However, the effectiveness of such warnings remains uncertain. Furthermore, if AI is trained on AI generated content, which is trained on AI generated content, it creates a garbage in, garbage out situation.

The reality is that we’re only beginning to grasp the true scale of the problem. The rise of AI slop presents a profound challenge to the integrity of the internet and the very fabric of our information ecosystem. The only way to fix the problem is to promote authenticity on the internet, making sure that bots can’t influence society more then real people.
